In the Garden: April

April marked the beginning of spring harvest.

English peas, snap peas, strawberries, kale, and swiss chard were ready to be gathered. Corn poppies, Jerusalem sage, and pomegranates are also blooming.

Our pepper garden is just starting to fill in, with a mix of peppers, herbs, onions, shallots, and garlic growing in. My husband makes incredible homemade hot sauces from this—something I’m working on convincing him to share more of soon.

This month we also welcomed new Cochin and frizzle chicks, growing quickly and soon ready to be moved into their coop in the coming weeks.

In April, the garden feels layered in a way that’s hard to replicate—soft greens against blooms, with structure and texture starting to emerge alongside lots of new growth.

It’s a month of transition—where everything is moving but nothing feels rushed, and the work of the past few months is beginning to take shape.

Now, with May beginning, the garden is just getting started.
